Good Technology is buying what it expects will be good technology to help manage the "bring your own device" trend. On Tuesday, the enterprise Relevant Products/Services mobile Relevant Products/Services solution provider announced that it has signed an agreement to buy Copiun, which offers secure Relevant Products/Services mobile collaboration Relevant Products/Services products.

Copiun, a startup based in Marlborough, Mass., offers solutions that allow mobile users to securely access, sync, collaborate and share documents on a file server or in SharePoint Relevant Products/Services, from anywhere, without a VPN connection or firewall reconfiguration. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

TrustedShare for Good

King Lee, president and CEO of Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Good Technology, said in a statement that the acquisition "will accelerate and enhance our ability to provide customers with more high-value, business productivity capabilities that incorporate our commitment to data Relevant Products/Services security."

The BYOD Relevant Products/Services trend is accelerating in the business world, where employees are using their own powerful, mobile devices -- such as smartphones, tablets, or laptops -- for work.

This reduces the number of devices an individual must juggle, and allows work to take place anywhere, but complicates IT departments' tasks because of device management Relevant Products/Services and security. Forrester Relevant Products/Services Research has said that two-thirds of employees work outside of their corporate office.

In May, Copiun announced its TrustedShare for Good product, which it called "the first and only secure mobile collaboration solution that is fully integrated" with Good Technology's Good Dynamics platform.

Certified by Veracode

TrustedShare for Good lets iPhone, iPad and Android Relevant Products/Services device owners securely access and share documents, with direct access to SharePoint and a company's file servers -- all without the need for firewall port re-configurations, extra data stores, or a VPN. Copiun also said that TrustedShare was the only Good-compatible software Relevant Products/Services in its category to be certified by third-party software security testing organization Veracode.

Copiun's TrustedShare for Good is a version of the company's TrustedShare product, and its integration Relevant Products/Services with Good Technology's products allow corporate documents to be managed and revised within Good's environment. It utilizes Good's AES 192 encryption, leading to an IPS 140-2 certification.

TrustedShare also gives IT admins control over the documents, apps Relevant Products/Services, and data stored on the mobile devices. It provides the ability to enforce multi-level, user profile-based entitlement policies governing storing, e-mailing, printing or opening documents, to manage through layered Active Directory group policies, and to set expiration policies to limit the life of a document.

Only IT-authorized apps, such as Quickoffice or an internal corporate app, can access data located in the Copiun containers. If a device is lost or stolen, TrustedShare offers passcode, remote Relevant Products/Services corporate data wipe, and access revoke.

Charles King, an analyst with Pund-IT, noted that BYOD, and the accompanying security risks, are "arising in companies of every size." He pointed out that compliance as well as security are BYOD issues, and that the Copiun acquisition adds extra layers of streamlined security and governance to Good Technology's product line.
