Supermicro just announced the latest addition to its line of SuperServer systems, designed for data centers and enterprise applications. The SuperServer 7089P-TR4T is an enterprise-class 8-socket server for Intel Xeon scalable processors -- ideal for data storage, big data processing, and cloud networking needs. Designed for mission-critical environments, it features an industry leading 12TB memory in a single 7U node.
Sold as a complete, 180-pound, rack-mountable system, the Supermicro SuperServer 7089P-TR4T supports eight Intel Xeon Scalable processors with three Intel Ultra Path Interconnects (UPIs) per CPU at 10.4 GT/s to deliver next-generation 8-socket server performance.
The system is optimized for high-performance computing (HPC) clusters and can be used with in-memory databases by installing up to 12TB of DDR4 memory, 41 NVMe devices (32 hot-swap), 23 PCI-E 3.0 cards, or eight double-width GPU cards. The system is well suited for virtualization, enabling enterprise customers to run their Virtual Machines on 224 Intel Xeon processor cores (448 threads).
It is easily scalable to meet increasing capacity needs. Supermicro President and CEO Charles Liang says its "unique modular design allows enterprise customers to scale their core databases and applications as they grow, from four processors with up to 6TB of memory to eight processors with up to 12TB of memory -- all in a single, expansion-ready 7U enclosure."
The new 7089P-TR4T server extends Supermicro's existing portfolio of multi-processor servers, which also includes the SuperServer 2049U-TR4. That model is a four-socket Ultra server which supports four Intel Xeon scalable processors, up to 6TB of memory, 24 hot-swap 2.5" drives (up to 4 NVMe), 11 PCI-E 3.0 slots, and flexible networking options in a 2U form factor.
While not a household name, Supermicro's server technology is used around the world for high-performance computing, cloud networking, Hadoop/big data management, and other enterprise IT applications. Supermicro puts an emphasis on developing "green" technology that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The company was founded in 1993 and conducts operations principally from its California headquarters, with subsidiaries in Taiwan and the Netherlands.
